Anyone thinking of the Côte d’Azur will almost immediately call the city of Nice. I think it is quite right, because Nice is a beautiful versatile city in France. You have many shops in the new part and if you walk to the old town you will come across the beautiful authentic shops, the beautiful buildings and wonderful markets to stroll around. Nice has something for everyone.
Nice old center, Vieux Nice
The old center of Nice is one of the most popular sights and at least my favorite part of Nice. You will find here narrow streets with colorful markets, tasty authentic restaurants and cozy shops. You can enjoy a few hours of strolling here. There is almost no car in sight here, so you can go for a nice walk.
Cours Saleya Square in Nice
The Cours Saleya square in Nice is one of the most popular sights in Nice. Six days a week there is a flower market here until 1 p.m. I’ve been here often enough and I really recommend it! On Monday morning the flea market is held here with lots of nice trinkets. Around the square there are many restaurants where you can have a nice lunch with, for example, a Salad Nicoise. But beware, it is always very busy here. No problem, just dive straight into the small streets of Vieux Nice and you will find many authentic restaurants here.
Shopping in Nice
As I told you at the beginning, I think it is best to shop in the “new” part of Nice. You will mainly find the chains here, but if you really want to shop, that might be what you want. Below I would like to tell you in which zones you can shop well:
- The pedestrian zone Rue de France and Rue du Massena. This pedestrian zone runs parallel to the Promenade des Anglais
- The large department stores in Nice are on Avenue Jean Medecin
- And go for luxury shopping to Avenue de Verdun
Place Massena square
Place Massena is a beautiful square in the center of Nice where all events are held. For example, the Christmas market is held here, which I wrote about in December. And soon in February the Carnival will start again. I will tell more about this in a new blog next week. And another tip: Go to the restaurant of Galeries Lafayette department store on Avenue Jean Medecin and from here you have a wonderful view over Place Massena.
